Harivallabh Sangeet Pratiyogita (Music Competition) - To encourage the young to appreciate and perfect themselves in the field of Hindustani Classical Music, and to bring out the best amongst the competitors, an open competition in Hindustani Classical Music was started by Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Mahasabha (Regd.), Jalandhar - Punjab in the year 1979. Since then it is organized every year.

GENERAL RULES FOR ANNUAL MUSIC COMPETITION: The Annual Music Competition will be held prior to the Annual Sangeet Sammelan every year. The competition will start at 10:00 AM on all the days.

There are Five Categories for the competition namely:

  • Vocal – Khayal Gayan Or Dhrupad Gayan
  • Vocal – Thumri, Dadra, Tappa Gayan - For Senior Age Group Only
  • Instrumental (Non-Percussion – Swar Vadya)
  • Instrumental (Percussion – Taal Vadya) – Tabla Vadan
  • Instrumental (Percussion – Taal Vadya) – Pakhawaj Vadan – For Senior Age Group only.

Attention – Participants:

There will be an Audition prior to the Music Competition.
The special recognition will be given to Dhrupad Gayan.

There are Two Age Groups namely:

  • Juniors (Yuva Varg) (From 10+ to 16 years)
  • Seniors (Varishth Yuva Varg (From 16+ to 25 years)

There are Three Prizes in each category namely:

  • First
  • Second
  • Third
  • In addition, the winners from the Senior Age Group (Varishth Yuva Varg) will be initiated as ‘Performing Artists’ during the next year's Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan.


Accommodation:  Accomodation in Halls/Dormitories is available on request (on first come-first served basis) at Shree Devi Talab Mandir & Shree Kali Mata Mandir in Devi Talab Complex.The arrangements have been made to provide Beddings in Halls/Dormitories for which hire chargeable will be payable on actual basis.


1. Categories

For Junior Age Group

The competition will be held in the following Three categories of Hindustani Classical Music

·          Vocal –  (Khayal Gayan/Dhrupad Gayan) 

·         Non – Percussion - (Swar Vadya)

·         Percussion – (Tabla/Pakhawaj)

For Senior Age Group

The competition will be held in the following Five categories of Classical Music

·          Vocal –  (Khayal Gayan/Dhrupad Gayan) 

·          Vocal - (Thumri, Dadra, Tappa)

·         Non – Percussion – (Swar Vadya)

·         Percussion – (Tabla)

·         Percussion – (Pakhawaj)

2. Age Limit:

There are the following Two age groups  in each category :

3. Audition:

There will be an AUDITION compulsory for all the competitors one day prior to the music competition. A panel of Judges will conduct the audition. The time allowed for audition will be upto 5 minutes (depending upon the Judges). The decision of the Judges will be FINAL and no objection whatsoever will be entertained. Only qualifying participants will be allowed to participate in the music competition.The certificates of participation will be given to the qualifying participants only.

4. Time Allowed:

Junior (Yuva Varg) -Vocal, Non-Percussion & Percussion – 6 to 8 minutes.

Senior (Varishth Yuva Varg) – Vocal, Non-Percussion & Percussion – 8 to 10 minutes.

Senior (Varishth Yuva Varg)Vocal (Thumri / Dadra / Tappa) - 6 to 8 minutes.

(A) The time duration includes the time taken by the competitor for the tuning of the Instruments, Mike setting etc. 

(B) A warning bell will be sounded to indicate that only 2 minutes are remaining and the competitor should wind up the performance within the next 2 minutes.

(C) The final bell will be sounded at the end of allotted time to tell the competitor to stop the performance.

(D) Margin Time: The competitor will be asked to stop the performance after 15 seconds of the total time allowed.

(E) Negative marks will be given, if the competitor fails to complete the performance by the final bell.

5. Accompanists with the Competitor:

A maximum of Two ( 2 ) Accompanists will be allowed to accompany the competitor. However, a competitor in Vocal category, in addition to the two accompanists, will be allowed to play Tanpura or Swarmandal himself/herself.Use of electronic Tanpura is allowed.

All accompanying instruments like Harmonium, Sarangi, Violin, Swarmandal etc. will be given the same weightage and will be taken at par for the purpose of counting the merit.

Accompanist (on Tabla, Harmonium, Tanpura) can be provided on a request made at the time of submitting the application.

6. Prizes, Awards & Recognitions:

All the contestants who will qualify the AUDITION shall receive the "Certificate of Participation" after their participation in the music competition. The Winners securing First, Second & Third positions shall be awarded Cash Prize, Medal/Momento and Merit Certificates. 

The Committee may reduce the number of prizes in a particular category/age group, if the number of contestants falls short of Six (6) in that particular category/age group.

The Winners from the Senior Age Group (Varishth Yuva Varg) securing First positions shall be initiated as ‘Performing Artists’ during the next year’s Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan and shall be given an opportunity to perform during the ‘Sangeet Sammelan’.

7. Application for Competition:

The participants shall seek entry to the audition/competition by submitting an application on a prescribed format. A sample format of the application form is appended herewith and can also be downloaded from our Website:" The applications complete in all respects (alongwith entry fee, proof of age & two recent passport size photographs) sent by post/courier will be accepted (TWO days prior to the audition) at the following address:

8. Last Date for Submission of Application Form: 

The last date of receipt of Application (along with Entry fee of Rs.200/- for Junior Category and Rs. 300/- for Senior Category, Proof of age & two recent passport size Photographs – one affixed on the application form and the other enclosed with it) sent by post/courier will be Two ( 2 ) days prior to the commencement date of the audition.

The Applications will also be accepted at the ‘Harivallabh Site office’ at Devi Talab, Jalandhar, One ( 1 ) day prior to the commencement date of the audition, from 10 A.M to 5 P.M.

The entries to the competition will close at 5.00 P.M ONE day prior to the commencement date of the audition.

10. Entry Fee:

Entry Fee is Rs.200/- for Junior Category and Rs.300/- for Senior Category.

The competitors who send their applications by post/courier should send their entry fee through a bank draft drawn in favour of Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Mahasabha, payable at Jalandhar, Punjab.

Those submitting their application forms by hand at the Harivallabh Site Office at Devi Talab, Jalandhar, can pay the Entry Fee in the form of a bank draft or in Cash and obtain a receipt for the same.

11. Exemption from Entry Fee:

No Entry Fee will be charged from the competitors who are staying in an orphanage/destitute home, provided they produce a written certificate for the same from the Head of the Institution.

12. Proof of Age:

The participants shall attach documentary proof of his/her age with the application. Legible self attested photocopy of a document will be accepted. However, in case of dispute, the contestant should be able to produce the original document.

13. Lists Of Competitors:

The lists of competitors whose application forms are received within the deadline will be prepared and displayed thereafter in the Site Office of the Mahasabha by 5.00 P.M. (a day prior to the commencement of the Audition).

14. Order of Participation:

Draw of lots will take place at 5.00 P.M a day prior to the commencement of the audition to determine the order of participation in each category & age group. A list of order of participation will be displayed at the venue of the audition immediately thereafter.

15. Judgment:

There shall be a panel of three Judges (at all levels of Competition) for the conducting of the music competition whose judgment will be final. Each Judge will hand over the judgment sheet at the completion of performance by a competitor for Tabulation by the Music Competition Committee.

The decision of the judges will be FINAL, and no objection whatsoever will be entertained.

16. Criteria for Judgement:

The performance of the competitors will be judged as per the following criteria:

·         Purity of Raag & Correct Intonation of Swaras,

·         Composition-Bandish,

·         Aalaap, Variety & Perfection of Taans,

·         Accuracy in Taal & Laya

·         System, Standard & General Impression in Presentation


Category: Vocal – (Dhrupad Gaayan)  

·         Purity of Raag & Correct Intonation of Swaras,

·         Composition-Bandish,

·         Nom-Tom Aalap in Dhrupad style & Layakari,

·         Accuracy in Taal & Laya

·         System, Standard & General Impression in Presentation

(2) Category: Vocal – (Thumri/Dadra/Tappa-For Senior Age Group only)

·         Correct pronunciation & Lyrics,

·         Bol Banav,

·         Emotions & Melody,

·         Accuracy in Taal & Laya

·         General Impression in Presentation.

(3) Category: Non-Percussion – (Swar Vadya) :

·         Purity of Raag & Correct Intonation of Swaras,

·         Composition-Gat,

·         Aalaap, Variety & Perfection of Taans, Toras & Jhala

·         Accuracy in Taal & Laya

·         System, Standard & General Impression in Presentation

(4) Category: Percussion – (Taal Vadya - Tabla and Pakhawaj)

·         Selection of Taal

17. Discipline:

The competitors are required to report at the Announcement Table about their presence 15 minutes before their expected time of performance. Every competitor is required to be present in the competition hall when a particular category starts and when his/her name is announced for performance. In case the competitor fails to reach the stage even after three calls, HE/SHE WILL STAND DISQUALIFIED FROM THE COMPETITION.

The participants will have to observe strict discipline and any of them found indulging in indiscipline of any nature (such as approaching the committee or judges, disrespect towards committee members, judges, use of foul/derogatory language etc.) is liable for disqualification from the competition.

18. Declaration of Results/ Presentation of Awards:

The result of the competition will be declared immediately after the competition of a particular category is over. Awards will be presented to the Winners of First, Second and Third positions (Special Prize, if any) on the same day after the competition. “Certificates of Participation” will be given to the qualifying participants.

19. Participation by First Prize Winners:

The Competitors who were declared as First Prize Winners in a particular category and a particular age group during the earlier held “Harivallabh Sangeet Pratiyogita” also referred to as “Music Competition” will not be allowed to compete in the same category & age group again.

20. Review of Rules

The Mahasabha reserves the right to amend any rule to make the competition more meaningful and transparent.
